The speeder bike chase in Return of the Jedi (1983) remains the clearest visual statement the genre has made about what piloted hovering transport should feel like: fast through trees, intimately close to the ground, immediately and completely illegal by the standards of any road authority that has ever existed. The pilots in that sequence are not concerned with regulatory jurisdictions. They are concerned with stormtroopers and, eventually, large trees. A.L.I. Technologies, a Japanese aerospace company, has built the XTurismo, which captures the spirit of the speeder bike with sufficient fidelity that it is recognisable as the same class of vehicle. The large trees and regulatory questions remain the pilot’s problem.

The XTurismo is a piloted hoverbike in limited production — approximately 200 units for the global market. It flew at Fuji Speedway in 2022 in front of an audience that was, by most accounts, unprepared for how comprehensively real it was. A.L.I. has since been making deliveries. What It Is

The XTurismo uses a hybrid propulsion system: a 228cc internal combustion engine combined with four electric motors. The combustion engine provides the primary thrust and extends flight time beyond what the electric motors alone could sustain; the electric motors handle stability and low-speed control with the responsiveness that electric systems offer over combustion alone. Maximum speed is 100 km/h. Operational altitude is approximately ten metres above ground level. Flight time under normal operating conditions is around 40 minutes.

The vehicle weighs 300 kilograms and accommodates one pilot. The operational envelope — one metre off the ground, 100 km/h, 40 minutes — describes a vehicle optimised for the specific pleasure of low-altitude high-speed flight over open terrain. It describes, with reasonable accuracy, the speeder bikes of Endor.

In Practice

The road illegality requires direct statement because it is total. The XTurismo is not road-legal in any standard jurisdiction by any conventional vehicle classification. It is not an ultralight aircraft under any classification that grants meaningful operating latitude. Buyers in each jurisdiction must independently establish what, if anything, they are legally permitted to do with it, and the answer varies. Some operate it on private land. Some navigate local aviation authority classifications. None of them drive it to the shops.

The combustion engine is significant — in the audio sense. The 228cc engine produces noise at a level that is consistent with its displacement and inconsistent with stealth. At full power, the XTurismo is the loudest thing happening in its immediate geographic area. This is not a complaint specific to A.L.I. — it is a consequence of the propulsion physics — but buyers who anticipated the relative quiet of electric-only vehicles should adjust their expectations accordingly.

The 40-minute flight time is the other operational constraint. Unlike some eVTOL products, the hybrid system means recharging is partly a fuel stop and partly a battery cycle, which changes the logistics. The 40 minutes is nonetheless the hard operational ceiling in normal conditions.

The speeder bike pilots of Return of the Jedi did not pay US$680,000 for their vehicles, did not review local aviation regulations before use, and did not worry about noise ordinances. They also flew into trees at 100 km/h, which the XTurismo’s pilot manual implicitly discourages. A.L.I. has built a vehicle that is real, functional, and limited by physics and regulation rather than by the ambition of its engineering team. The physics constraints — 40 minutes, 100 km/h, ten metres — are honest. The regulatory constraints are the world’s, not A.L.I.’s. What remains after those constraints is a genuine hoverbike, delivering to paying customers, at a price that has not discouraged approximately 200 of them. That is a narrower category of miracle than the Endor forest sequence suggested was coming, but it is a miracle that ships.
